The Four Districts Day Care Centre was established in 1981 by a group of
interested people in the community in consultation with the Eastern Health Board
for the purpose of providing a facility where the senior citizens of Saggart, Rathcoole,
Newcastle and Brittas can meet socially in pleasant surroundings and enjoy
meeting old friends and making new ones.
The premises became vacant on the death of Dr Josephine Clarke who had been
the dispensary doctor in Rathcoole from 1931.
These premises, attached to the old dispensary, were the residence of the dispensary
doctor since around 1888. Dr. Clarke had retired in the late 1960s but for thirty years
had been a much loved doctor and friend to the community of Rathcoole and surrounds.
As the population grows older in Rathcoole and Districts the need to
care for our Senior Citizens has increased. One of the unsung heroes
in the Community has been the Four Districts Day Care Centre which provides
a service to the elder members of our society.
It is a place where they can
mix with others in a warm and friendly atmosphere and have lunch provided
on a daily basis. There is a separate television room and regular daily group
activities to stimulate body and mind plus occasional days out . Clients
can avail of special services such as hairdressing and exercise programmes to
keep bodies and minds active and we now have physiotherapy and reflexology available.
They are collected daily from their homes (and delivered back) by bus.
All of these services are provided by the Day Care staff and volunteers.
The Centre is adjacent to the Health Centre and liaises closely with it.
It is now a registered charity CHY 20539.
